Metal mixing — taming harsh cymbals without killing air

Cymbals are shredding my ears around 7-9k but I don't want a dull cymbal. Dynamic EQ? De-esser on the overheads? What's the move?

Dynamic EQ on the overheads, narrow, only ducking when they spike. Keeps the air, kills the harsh.

Also check your cymbal choice/recording — a lot of 'harsh' is baked in at the source.
